Population size and residency patterns of northern bottlenose whales (Hyperoodon ampullatus) using the Gully, Nova Scotia

چکیده

A population of northern bottlenose whales (Hyperoodon ampullatus) uses the Gully, a submarine canyon off coast Nova Scotia, Canada. Eleven years photo-identification records has permitted estimation size using mark-recapture techniques. The estimate was small (133 individuals, 95% CI = 111-166 from left side identifications; 127 106-160 right identifications). not closed, with combined mortality, mark change and emigration rate estimated at 13% per year for identifications (95% 9-17) 14% 10-18). There no significant increase or decrease in between 1988-1999 (change size: side: –0.13% year, -3.4 to 3.9; –0.43% -4.5 3.1). sex ratio roughly 1:1, equal numbers sub-adult mature males. Over summer field season, individuals emigrated from, re-immigrated into spending an average 20 days within Gully before leaving (left 19 days, SE 17; 23 10). Approximately 34% present any time. Individuals all age classes displayed similar residency patterns although there were annual differences as spent less time 1996 than 1990 1997. Sighting rates extensive fieldwork, indicating little variability number each summer. Accurate estimates will be useful determining regulations required coverage marine protected area Gully.

Social organization in northern bottlenose whales, Hyperoodon ampullatus: not driven by deep-water foraging?

It is postulated that deep-water foraging in sperm whales, Physeter macrocephalus, has led to communal care of young and long-term female bonds. By studying the social organization of a second, unrelated, deep-diving species, the northern bottlenose whale, we investigated the role that deep diving may play in the evolution of cetacean sociality. Northern bottlenose whales in a deep-water canyon...

Body density and diving gas volume of the northern bottlenose whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus)

Diving lung volume and tissue density, reflecting lipid store volume, are important physiological parameters that have only been estimated for a few breath-hold diving species. We fitted 12 northern bottlenose whales with data loggers that recorded depth, 3-axis acceleration and speed either with a fly-wheel or from change of depth corrected by pitch angle. We fitted measured values of the chan...

Correction: Body density and diving gas volume of the northern bottlenose whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus).

Correction: Body density and diving gas volume of the northern bottlenose whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus) Patrick Miller, Tomoko Narazaki, Saana Isojunno, Kagari Aoki, Sophie Smout and Katsufumi Sato There was an error published in J. Exp. Biol. 219, 2458-2468. Eqn 1 was presented incorrectly. A ‘−1’ was missing after the ratio of densities, and the subscript of the first instance of the density ...

Deep-diving behaviour of the northern bottlenose whale, Hyperoodon ampullatus (Cetacea: Ziphiidae)

Using suction-cup attached time^depth recorder/VHF radio tags, we have obtained the ¢rst diving data on northern bottlenose whales (Hyperoodon ampullatus), the ¢rst such data on any species within the family Ziphiidae. Two deployments in 1997 on northern bottlenose whales in a submarine canyon o¡ Nova Scotia demonstrated their exceptional diving ability, with dives approximately every 80min to ...

Characteristics of biosonar signals from the northern bottlenose whale, Hyperoodon ampullatus.

The biosonar pulses from free-ranging northern bottlenose whales (Hyperoodon ampullatus) were recorded with a linear hydrophone array. Signals fulfilling criteria for being recorded close to the acoustic axis of the animal (a total of 10 clicks) had a frequency upsweep from 20 to 55 kHz and durations of 207 to 377 μs (measured as the time interval containing 95% of the signal energy). The sourc...
